Residential Household Garbage in a standard 26″ X 36″ bag or similar is accepted at all sites at a cost of $2.00/bag. Some discounts may apply at operators discretion.

Burn Barrel or Fireplace Ash is also $2.00/bag.

You may haul direct to the Regional Landfill where only member residents are allowed up to 500kg’s at no cost.

**The above fees and policy only apply to residents of Commission Members or Participating Municipal Partners. It does not apply to Commercial Business Waste or Residential Waste Collectors.  

Large rigid plastics include everything that is plastic with preferably no other material attached to it like glass, wood or metal.

Large Plastics can be toys, lawn furniture, wading pools (but not the liner or bladder), plastic pipe, empty barrels, pails, vinyl siding, automotive bumper covers and lattice etc.

Large Plastics are only accepted at the Athabasca Transfer Site, the Boyle Site and the Whispering Hills Site.

If you are re-siding your home the Athabasca and Boyle Site has a specific place just for PVC Vinyl Siding accepted at a reduced cost if properly sorted.

Businesses can drop off their cardboard at the Athabasca Recycle Facility or they can apply for a Front Load Cardboard Bin that not only accepts cardboard but other recyclables can be placed in the bin if properly bagged.

Household Related Paper
Newspaper, glossy flyers, magazines, catalogues, can labels, paper sugar bags, gift wrapping paper, phone books, and soft cover books can all be recycled in a clear bag or loosely placed in the blue box.

No hardcover books, tissues, or washroom paper towel.

Office Related Paper
White and coloured ledger, NCR paper envelopes, shredded paper, file folders, printer paper, copier paper, and paper gift bags can all be recycled in a clear bag or loosely placed in the blue box.

Please place shredded paper in double or heavy duty clear or blue bags.

No glossy paper, junk mail, tissue, washroom towels, and bubble wrap envelopes.

Next Appliance Round-Ups:
May 16th to 26th, 2025

August 30th to September 9th, 2024

​Appliances without Freon include washers, dryers, furnaces, hot water tanks, dish washers, and stoves. They are accepted at all sites any time at a cost of $10.00/ea

During a Spring or Fall Round-Up any items above are free to drop off at any Athabasca Commission Site during normal operating hours.

Appliances with Freon include fridges, freezers, water coolers and air conditioning units. They are accepted at all sites any time at a cost of $20.00/ea.

During a Spring or Fall Appliance Round-Up any units with freon have a reduced cost of $10.00/ea. at any Athabasca Commission Site during normal operating hours.

Commercial Business appliances with Freon are accepted at the Athabasca and Boyle Site at a cost of $60.00/ea.

Furniture is bulky and costs a lot to handle when disposed of at a Transfer Site so if you can haul it direct to the Boyle Landfill or Regional Landfill you will not be charged for them.  If you dispose of them at any of the Transfer Sites the cost may be $5.00 to $10.00/ea. at the discretion of the site operator.

**Any of the above rates do not apply to Commercial Business Waste or Residential Waste Collectors.

Mattresses and box-springs are bulky items that cost a lot to handle when disposed of at a Transfer Site so if you can haul them direct to the Boyle Landfill or Regional Landfill you will not be charged for them.  If you dispose of them at any of the Transfer Sites the cost is $10.00/ea.

**Any of the above rates do not apply to Commercial Business Waste or Residential Waste Collectors.

Most household paint is accepted for recycling at all the sites in the Commission area.  Please haul direct large quantities of paint to the Athabasca or Boyle Site.

Televisions, computers, monitors and all in one computers, printers, servers, laptops, copiers, scanners and fax machines are all acceptable at no charge at any of the sites in the Commission area.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) materials are left over, unused products from the household that may be flammable, corrosive, reactive/explosive or toxic/poisonous.

Products like cleaners, aerosol paint, insect repellent, antifreeze, brake fluid, car polishes, degreasers, glues, drain cleaners, insecticides, lighter fluid, oven cleaners, gas cylinders, rubbing alcohol, turpentine and weed killers can be taken to the Boyle or Athabasca Site for proper sorting and disposal.

All products should be in original container.  If leaking place inside another container. 

All empty containers can go into regular garbage.

Empty 16oz Camp Style Propane Cylinders when empty can go with your Household Garbage.

Empty or Out of Date 20lb, 30lb and 100lb propane tanks are acceptable at any of the Transfer Sites or Landfills at no charge.

Propane Cylinders or Tanks that are full or partially full must be taken to either the Athabasca Transfer Site or Boyle Transfer Site for special handling at no charge.

BBQs are accepted at any site for a cost of $5.00/each.

Fluorescent light tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs are accepted at all the sites however any large quantities or commercial business bulbs should be directed to the Athabasca or Boyle Site.

Automotive and Garage Waste

All Sites collect small quantities of used oil filters and oil containers in the Athabasca area. Please haul large quantities to either the Athabasca or Boyle Sites.

Used Oil is only accepted at the Athabasca or Boyle Site.

ATV, motorcycle, golf cart, lawnmower, car, light truck and medium truck tires are accepted at all the Transfer Sites.

Large OTR and tractor tires are accepted at the Grassland, Boyle and Colinton Sites.

All sites accept the following batteries for recycling:

  • Lead Acid Wet Cell Auto Batteries
  • Small Sealed Lead Acid Batteries (SSLA/Pb)

To Prevent Fires:

  • Place tool, laptop and cell phone batteries in individual plastic bags. (and/or) Tape over the terminals of the batteries.

ATV’s, OHV’s, seadoos, snowmobiles and lawn tractors are accepted at any Transfer Sites at a cost of $45.00/EA. They are accepted at no charge  at the Boyle or Regional Landfill.

All Fluids and Batteries must be removed.

Boats, tent trailers or hot tubs are not accepted at any of the Transfer Sites.  They are accepted at no charge at the Boyle or Regional Landfill.

Only Mondays and Fridays at Boyle from 10am to 4pm.

Only Tuesdays and Thursdays at Regional from 9am to 4pm.

Note: The Athabasca Site will accept boats, tent trailers and hot tubs at a cost of $100.00/ea. Tues through Sat 9am to 5pm.

Autos, holiday trailers and truck campers are not accepted at any of the Transfer Sites. They are only accepted at the Regional or Boyle Landfill at a cost of $100.00/Metric Tonne. (All Fluids and Batteries must be removed)

Only Mondays and Fridays at Boyle from 10 am to 4pm.

Only Tuesdays and Thursdays at Regional from 9am to 4pm.

Agricultural Waste

OBSOLETE PESTICIDE ROUND-UPS

Check where and when you can take your obsolete pesticide and livestock medications into a nearby retailer. The Pesticide round-ups are operated by Clean Farms.

Dirty Silage or Grain Plastic must be directly hauled to the Regional or Boyle Landfill and tip fees will apply. 

Construction Waste

Asphalt Shingles and Cedar Shakes are accepted in small quantities at the any of the Transfer Sites.

No Contractor loads or Dump Trailers accepted!

For Contractors and Residents with Dump Trucks or Trailers asphalt shingles can be hauled direct to either of the two landfills at a cost of $45.00/metric tonne.  Cedar Shakes $30.00/metric tonne.
Asphalt Shingles from Contractors, Dump Trucks and Trailers may also be accepted at the Athabasca Site at a cost of $85.00/metric tonne.
Large loads may be redirected to Landfill at operators discretion.

Do you need a Waste Bin?

General Wood Waste must be clean of all non-wood waste debris and dirt and is acceptable in small quantities at all sites.

No Contractor loads or Dump Trailers accepted!

(Generally includes brush, branches, dimensional lumber and trees < 6″)

Large quantities of General Wood Waste is acceptable at the Regional and Boyle Landfill only.

Pressure Treated Wood and Railway Ties are only accepted at the Boyle and Athabasca Site in small quantities or the Regional Landfill in large quantities.

Tree Stumps less than 6 inches with heavy dirt still intact is only acceptable at the Boyle or Regional Landfill in small quantities.

Scrap Metal is accepted at all the Transfer Sites and Landfills in the Commission area.

All Large Volumes must be directed to the Athabasca or Boyle Site.

All Ferrous (Iron and Steel) and Non-Ferrous (Copper, Aluminum and Stainless) are accepted.

The Waste Commission is not a broker and does not pay for Scrap Metal. The Commission charges fees for Scrap Metal it receives and manages it for further processing.
